Rhode Island Police Stations and State Police Barracks
After an arrest in Rhode Island, a person may be transported to a municipal police station or a Rhode Island State Police barracks for processing. The location usually depends on where the alleged offense occurred, which law enforcement agency conducted the stop or investigation, and whether the arrest involved local police or the Rhode Island State Police.
Following a Rhode Island DUI arrest, officers may use the station or barracks to complete booking paperwork, document personal property, take fingerprints and photographs, request a chemical test, and prepare release or court documents.
The directory below provides links to Rhode Island State Police barracks and municipal police departments throughout the state.

What Happens at a Police Station After a Rhode Island DUI Arrest?
The exact procedure depends on the arresting agency, the circumstances of the traffic stop, and whether the person is accused of refusing or failing a chemical test.
Processing following a Rhode Island DUI arrest may include:
- Recording the arrested person’s identifying information
- Taking fingerprints and booking photographs
- Inventorying personal belongings
- Preparing the arrest report and charging documents
- Advising the person of rights related to chemical testing
- Requesting a breath, blood, or urine test when legally applicable
- Documenting a refusal to submit to testing
- Allowing the arrested person to contact an attorney
- Determining release or bail conditions
- Providing information about an upcoming court date
The police station or barracks where a person is processed may not be the location where the case will ultimately be heard.
A criminal DUI charge may proceed through the Rhode Island District Court. A civil chemical-test-refusal case or certain traffic matters may proceed through the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal.
Can You Pick Someone Up After a DUI Arrest?
A family member or friend should contact the arresting agency before traveling to the station.
The timing and conditions of release may depend on:
- Whether booking has been completed
- Whether bail must be posted
- The arrested person’s physical condition
- Whether a responsible adult must provide transportation
- Whether the vehicle was towed
- Whether additional criminal charges are involved
- Whether the person is being transported to another facility or court
A police department may not provide detailed case information over the telephone. However, it may be able to confirm whether a person is still being processed and explain its general release procedures.
Do not call 911 to ask about the status of an arrested person. Use the police department’s non-emergency telephone number.
How Do You Determine Which Police Department Made the Arrest?
The arresting agency is usually identified on documents provided after the arrest, including:
- A criminal summons
- A traffic citation
- Bail or release paperwork
- Chemical-test documents
- A refusal notice
- A property receipt
- Court paperwork
- A vehicle-towing notice
- The police arrest report
When the arresting agency is unclear, consider where the traffic stop occurred and whether the officer was employed by a municipal department, the Rhode Island State Police, or another law-enforcement agency.
How Do You Obtain a Rhode Island Police Report?
The procedure for obtaining an arrest report, accident report, or other police record varies by agency.
The person requesting the record may need to contact the police department or State Police barracks that created it. Before submitting a request, ask:
- Whether the report is available
- Whether identification is required
- Whether a written request must be submitted
- Whether the request can be made online
- Whether there is a copying or processing fee
- Whether the report can be released while the case remains pending
- Whether photographs, recordings, or videos require separate requests
Some materials may not be immediately available to the public while a criminal case is pending. A Rhode Island criminal defense attorney may obtain police reports, recordings, test results, and other evidence through the criminal discovery process.
Speak With a Rhode Island DUI Defense Attorney
An arrest is not the same as a conviction.
The legality of the traffic stop, the officer’s observations, field sobriety testing, chemical-test procedures, police video, body-camera footage, witness statements, equipment maintenance, and the handling of evidence may all affect a Rhode Island DUI case.
